1. What EnergyMonkey is
EnergyMonkey is a mobile application that helps residents of deregulated U.S. states shop competitive electricity and natural-gas suppliers. The app reads your bill (via photo OCR or manual entry) to determine your current utility, supplier, and rate, compares against the relevant state regulator's public rate database (PUCO Apples-to-Apples in Ohio, similar databases elsewhere), estimates your savings, and connects you to a chosen supplier's enrollment page.
EnergyMonkey is not an energy supplier. We don't sell, generate, or deliver electricity or gas. Your local utility continues to deliver your energy regardless of which supplier you choose.
EnergyMonkey is working toward registration as a PUCO-certified power broker / aggregator. Until that registration is complete, EnergyMonkey is an information and comparison service only — final enrollment with any supplier happens on the supplier's own platform under their PUCO certification.
2. Eligibility
- You must be 18 or older
- You must be a resident of a state where competitive supplier shopping is legal (currently Ohio; other deregulated states rolling out soon)
- You must be the customer of record on the energy account you're shopping, or authorized to act on their behalf
3. Your account
You can use EnergyMonkey without an account, but to save your bill, get rate alerts, or be tracked across sessions you'll need to create one. We support email sign-up and OAuth via Google, Apple, and Facebook.
You're responsible for the accuracy of the information you enter, for keeping the device or OAuth provider you use to sign in secure, and for any activity on your account. If you suspect unauthorized access, sign out from Settings → Account Profile → Sign Out and email us.
4. Acceptable use
You agree not to:
- Submit information about an account you don't have authority over
- Reverse-engineer or extract the source code from the app
- Use any automated system (bot, scraper, etc.) to access the app
- Interfere with the app's normal functioning
- Attempt to access another user's data
- Use the app for any purpose that violates state law, federal law, or applicable utility-commission rules
5. Rate offers and savings estimates
Supplier rate offers come from PUCO's public Apples-to-Apples comparison data. We refresh the data periodically; rates can change at any time. The offer you see in the app may not match the supplier's website at the moment you enroll — always confirm the rate on the supplier's enrollment page.
The savings number we show is an estimate, not a guarantee. Actual savings depend on your usage patterns, billing terms, contract length, monthly fees, cancellation fees, and other factors.
6. Switching with a supplier
When you tap "Continue to supplier," you leave EnergyMonkey and go to that supplier's website. The terms of any enrollment, rate plan, contract, or service are between you and the supplier — not between you and EnergyMonkey.
Under Ohio law you have seven (7) calendar days from the postmark of your utility's confirmation notice to rescind a switch by contacting your utility. Beyond that, cancellation is governed by the supplier's contract terms.
7. Compensation
If and when EnergyMonkey is registered as a PUCO power broker / aggregator, EnergyMonkey may receive a commission or fee from the supplier when a customer enrolls through the app. This compensation is paid by the supplier, not by you, and does not increase your rate. Until registration is complete, EnergyMonkey does not collect any compensation tied to enrollments.
8. Intellectual property
EnergyMonkey, including its name, logo, monkey mascot, slogan ("Rates that make you go bananas."), copy, screen designs, and software, is owned by us. You're granted a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable license to use the app for its intended purpose. Supplier names, logos, and rate information remain the property of their respective owners.
9. Disclaimers
EnergyMonkey is provided as-is and as-available. We don't guarantee that the app will be uninterrupted, error-free, or secure. We don't guarantee that any specific rate offer will be available when you try to enroll, or that you'll save money by switching. To the fullest extent permitted by law, we disclaim all warranties, express or implied.
10. Limitation of liability
To the fullest extent permitted by law, EnergyMonkey is not liable for any indirect, incidental, consequential, or punitive damages arising from your use of the app, or for damages caused by a supplier you enroll with. Our total liability for any claim is limited to the amount you have paid us in the 12 months before the claim — which today is $0, since the app is free.
11. Termination
You can stop using EnergyMonkey any time. Delete your data from Settings → Privacy & Security → Clear my data, or email us. We can suspend or terminate your account if you violate these terms.
12. Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Ohio. Any dispute that can't be resolved by email will be brought in a state or federal court located in Ohio.
13. Changes
If we make a material change, we'll post the updated version with a new effective date and surface a notice in the app the next time you open it.
